On 4 September 2014, workers at the NEXT factory in Colombo, Sri Lanka were taken ill with food poisoning. Over 200 workers were admitted to a nearby hospital, where one female worker died on 7 September.

Burmese migrant workers' factory announces closure

Over 500 Burmese migrant workers at the Yuan Jiou factory in Mae Sot, Thailand, were fighting to be paid the minimum wage, for an end to forced overtime and for an employment contract. In the fall of 2014 the factory announced its closure as of December.

Chunji workers win right to organize at factory

Garment workers at Chunji Knit Ltd., in Dhaka, Bangladesh, can now freely organize a union, and workers fired for union activity will be reinstated, according to a Memorandum of Understanding signed by Chunji management and the Bangladesh Federation of Workers Solidarity (BFWS) in August 2014. The agreement follows pressure from the Clean Clothes Campaign, Workers Rights Consortium and Solidarity Center, demanding Chunji Knit and its buyers remediate workers' rights violations earlier this year.

Thousands of workers left jobless

6,000 workers were left jobless after three factories in Sri Lanka and two in Pakistan were closed. The sole owner of the five factories disappeared with all of the company’s assets. In March 2013 the Clean Clothes Campaign reached out to several European buyers.

Pressure on unionised workers

The Turkish union Deri-Is asked the Clean Clothes Campaign for support in a case of dismissal of four union members and intimidation of union members at the Ismaco factory. The Clean Clothes Campaign engaged with the Dutch owner and Italian buyers, and worked closely with Italian trade unions.

Factory tries to dodge inflation correction

Gokaldas Exports refused to pay an increased inflation correction fee to approximately 9,900 workers in six of their factories in Bangalore. The Clean Clothes Campaign and the Workers Rights Consortium contacted main buyers H&M and Adidas. They discussed the issue with Gokaldas, after which the so-called Dearness Allowance was paid to the workers, including back payment.
